FAQs about animated videos

What is an animated video?

It may sound obvious but technically it could be any video that is entirely animated from start to finish. But there is some overlap. Avatar, for example, is 99% animated, but it also includes some live action film. But you wouldn’t call that a video. It’s a feature film.

What we mean by animated videos are animated explainers: which explain something in about 90 seconds using animation. (If it’s not an explainer, it’s an ad, which promotes something.) That’s not to say you can’t use live action in an animated explainer or other media, you can. It just depends on what you want to achieve.

Should it be 2D animation or 3D animation?

This is a bit of a trick question, because what really matters is identifying what you want to say in animation and then choosing the most appropriate technique to deliver the message. It may be that 2D animation is the best technique, best suited to your bran, your audience and your objective.

On the other hand, it could just as easily be 3D computer animation or even a mix of 2D or 3D and live action film. We figure this out with you as we go through the production process. When we understand what you want to achieve we can explore which techniques and creative options are most appropriate.

How long should an animated video be?

Another trick question… It needs to be as long as it needs to be to get your message across. Although we don’t recommend anything longer than 90 seconds by default unless there’s a very good reason to make it longer. And we don’t recommend that because the purpose of the animated videos we make is usually to drive traffic, increase leads or conversions and as such, they are designed to capture attention, stimulate curiosity and desire to find out more. They are a stepping stone in a longer journey the customer is taking.

How much do animated videos cost?

Avatar cost $237 million. But we’re guessing you’re not about to ask us to make Avatar 2 or anything with a Hollywood A-list celebrity in it. Even so, there is a similarity with Avatar in that the price of an animated video depends on what you want in it, rather than how long it is (although that can be a factor in certain instances).

That said, we understand you may want a rough idea to help you choose the company to create your video for you. We have three price categories which you can read about in our Guide along with examples of videos in each price category.

How long does it take to create an animated video?

Usually between six and eight weeks. We have a six step process, which you can read more about in our Guide. And we also provide each client with a video production schedule showing them which deliverables are due and when.

How should I use animated videos for marketing?

The vast majority of our clients use animated videos in their marketing campaigns. Typically, they use them to drive traffic to their website, increase conversions on their website or add extra value to their customers’ journey and experience in some way.

But there’s plenty of scope to use them in all sorts of others ways to communicate a message. The most important thing to define is the purpose of your video, and then we create it to be fit for that purpose.
